Environmental Services Environmental Services

Environmental Services

At MEK Earth & Environmental Inc., we deliver integrated environmental solutions grounded in science, driven by risk insight and focused on practical implementation.
Our services support clients across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage planning and permitting through to operations, closure and post-closure and helping to manage environmental liabilities, meet regulatory obligations and enhance long-term sustainability outcomes.
We combine hydrogeology, environmental science, engineering and stakeholder engagement, with particular strength in projects where water resources, contamination risks and environmental sensitivities are critical.

What We Do
Environmental Site Assessment (Phase I) at a Commercial Property Site.
An environmental specialist conducts site reconnaissance by reviewing site conditions, documenting observations and identifying potential environmental concerns as part of the Phase I ESA due diligence process.

Environmental Site Assessments

We undertake Phase I, Phase II and Phase III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) to identify environmental risks and liabilities associated with land and asset transactions.

Beyond standard assessments, our approach emphasises:

  • Risk-based investigation design;
  • Integration of hydrogeological and contaminant transport processes; and
  • Development of robust Conceptual Site Models (CSMs).

Our outputs support:

  • Investment decision-making;
  • Regulatory compliance;
  • Brownfield redevelopment; and
  • Environmental liability management.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)

Environmental site assessments
Stakeholder Consultation on Large-Scale Water Resources Development.
An environmental specialist engages with community leaders and government officials to discuss potential environmental and social impacts, identify risks and opportunities, and inform mitigation strategies associated with large-scale water resources development.

We deliver comprehensive ESIA/EIA services aligned with national regulations and international standards, including IFC Performance Standards, World Bank and AfDB frameworks.

Our strength lies in integrating environmental, social and water resource considerations into a single coherent assessment framework, particularly in complex and sensitive environments.

We support:

  • Baseline environmental and socio-economic studies;
  • Impact identification, modelling and evaluation;
  • Mitigation hierarchy application;
  • ESMP development and implementation planning;
  • Stakeholder engagement and disclosure; and
  • Climate risk and resilience integration.
What We Do
Conceptual Model of Contaminant Fate and Transport from an Upland Mining Site to a Downstream Aquifer.
The illustration depicts the migration of contaminants originating from an uphill mining operation, where rainfall infiltration mobilises pollutants from mine waste and tailings. These contaminants percolate through the subsurface, entering the groundwater system and moving downgradient via natural flow processes (advection and dispersion) toward a downstream aquifer. The diagram highlights key pathways, including surface runoff, infiltration, and subsurface transport, as well as potential receptors such as groundwater users, surface water bodies and nearby communities.

Contaminated Land and Water Assessment

We provide advanced contaminated site investigation services, with strong emphasis on subsurface processes and groundwater systems.

Our work goes beyond delineation to include:

  • Fate and transport analysis;
  • Hydrogeological characterisation of contaminant pathways;
  • Geochemical processes including acid rock drainage (ARD); and
  • Risk-based interpretation aligned with regulatory frameworks.

This enables clients to move from problem identification to actionable solutions.

Risk Assessment and Remediation Planning

Environmental site assessments
In-Situ Bioremediation at an Abandoned Industrial Site.
The illustration shows the application of in-situ bioremediation techniques, where naturally occurring or enhanced microorganisms are used to degrade contaminants within soil and groundwater without excavation. Amendments such as oxygen and nutrients are introduced through injection wells to stimulate microbial activity, enabling the breakdown of pollutants into less harmful substances. Monitoring wells are used to track remediation progress and verify improvements in groundwater quality over time.

We develop practical, site-specific remediation strategies that balance technical effectiveness, regulatory compliance and cost efficiency.

Our approach is:

  • Risk-based rather than prescriptive;
  • Tailored to site hydrogeology and contaminant behaviour; and
  • Designed for implementability and long-term performance.

We support clients through:

  • Risk assessment;
  • Remediation option evaluation;
  • Remedial Action Plan (RAP) development; and
  • Implementation oversight and performance monitoring.
Environmental and social impact studies
Phytoremediation at a Brownfield Site.
The illustration demonstrates the use of vegetation to remediate contaminated soil at an abandoned industrial (brownfield) site. Through natural processes such as phytoextraction, phytostabilisation, phytovolatilisation and rhizodegradation, plants and associated root-zone microorganisms absorb, degrade or immobilise contaminants, gradually improving soil quality and restoring environmental conditions over time.

Land and Water Reclamation

Environmental site assessments
Land and Water Reclamation in a Highly Degraded Landscape.
The image illustrates integrated land and water reclamation activities within a severely disturbed subregional environment, where deforestation and land degradation have impacted natural ecosystems and stream systems. Field specialists conduct site assessment, water quality sampling and restoration planning alongside active earthworks, including regrading, erosion control and stream stabilisation. The intervention demonstrates a coordinated approach to restoring ecosystem function, improving water quality and rebuilding resilient landscapes over time.

We support the restoration of degraded and disturbed environments, particularly in mining and industrial contexts.

Our work integrates:

  • Soil rehabilitation and ecosystem recovery;
  • Water system restoration and stabilisation;
  • Erosion and sediment control; and
  • Long-term monitoring and performance verification.

We focus on achieving sustainable, regulator-compliant and environmentally resilient outcomes.

Environmental Monitoring and Compliance

We design and implement robust environmental monitoring systems that support compliance, operational decision-making and performance tracking.

Our monitoring frameworks are:

  • Scientifically defensible;
  • Aligned with regulatory and lender requirements; and
  • Designed for long-term data integrity and usability.

We support:

  • Groundwater, surface water and seepage monitoring;
  • Effluent and discharge compliance monitoring;
  • Environmental audits and compliance reviews; and
  • Data interpretation, reporting and advisory.

Water and Environmental Advisory for Infrastructure and Mining

We provide specialist advisory services for projects with complex water and environmental risk profiles, including mining, hydropower and large-scale infrastructure.

Our expertise includes:

  • Environmental flow and hydrological assessments;
  • Sediment transport and catchment processes;
  • Acid mine drainage (AMD) risk and management;
  • Tailings and waste facility environmental performance; and
  • Seepage, leakage and contamination pathway analysis.

We support donor-funded and lender-supervised projects, ensuring alignment with international best practice.

Environmental Data, GIS and Digital Solutions

MEK Earth & Environmental Inc. designs and delivers integrated digital environmental systems that strengthen monitoring, reporting and decision-making across water resources, climate resilience and environmental management programmes.

Our approach combines environmental science, hydrogeology, geospatial technologies and digital platforms to transform field observations, monitoring datasets and community-based inputs into structured, decision-ready intelligence. These systems are designed to support both technical users and non-specialist stakeholders, enabling practical application in real-world regulatory, operational and community settings.
